Laboratory endurance capacity predicts variation in field locomotor behaviour among lizard species.

چکیده
I measured locomotor endurance capacities of lizards on a motorized treadmill in the laboratory and compared average values for different species with quantitative measures of their movement in the field (percentage of time moving, N=15 species; moves/min, N=13; daily movement distance, N=11). I hypothesized that endurance would be positively related to all three movement indices. Relationships between log endurance and log movement were computed as conventional Pearson product-moment correlations and as the equivalent with phylogenetically independent contrasts. Endurance was significantly positively related to both the percentage of time moving and the daily movement distance. This is the first study to demonstrate such relationships with phylogenetically based statistical methods. These results suggest that endurance capacities of lizards are coadapted with their typical locomotor behaviour. Copyright 1999 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.

Relationships between locomotor performance, microhabitat use and antipredator behaviour in lacertid lizards
1. Microhabitat use and antipredator behaviour (i.e. behavioural response to a bird model and refuge microhabitat) was measured in an experimental set-up for 11 lacertid lizard species. Additionally, locomotor performance (sprint speed, climbing and clambering speed, manoeuvrability and endurance) of the same species was quantified. 2. The results showed considerable interspecific variation in ...
متن کاملLizard threat display handicaps endurance.
Honest-signalling theory asserts that threat displays reliably advertise attributes that influence fighting success. Endurance, as measured by treadmill performance, predicts the outcome of agonistic interactions among lizards. If threat displays in lizards function to advertise endurance capacity then variation in threat displays should correlate with endurance. I tested this prediction for th...
متن کاملLocomotor Performance and Activity Energetics of Helodermatid Lizards
Locomotor performance and activity energetics were analyzed in 19 individual helodermatid lizards ranging in mass from 24.5-1220 g. We measured maximum sprint speeds, endurance on a treadmill, cost of transport, and aerobic capacity (rO2max) at a mean body temperature of 30.8 C. The maximum sprint speed for both Heloderma species averaged 1.7 km/h, which is among the lowest recorded for lizards...
متن کاملActivity Predicts Male Reproductive Success in a Polygynous Lizard
Activity patterns and social interactions play a key role in determining reproductive success, although this is poorly understood for species that lack overt social behaviour. We used genetic paternity analysis to quantify both multiple paternity and the relative roles of activity and social behaviour in determining reproductive success in a nondescript Australian lizard. During the breeding se...
متن کاملLocomotion Energetics of the Ghost Crab I. Metabolic Cost and Endurance
Arthropods possess spectacular diversity in locomotor design. Yet it is not clear what unique constraints, if any, variation in design imposes on mechanics, metabolic energy cost or endurance during terrestrial locomotion. In the present study metabolic energy cost and endurance on a treadmill are measured for an arthropod, the eight-legged sideways travelling ghost crab, Ocypode quadrata (Fabr...
